When Government Oversight becomes a Risky Proposition!
Reports leaked out yesterday about the Citigroup purchase of a $50 million dollar Dassault Falcon corporate jet, after receiving more than $45 billion dollars of taxpayer funding from the TARP bailout. Even though this purchase has been in the works for more than 2 years and Citigroup is selling two of their older jets to pay for the new purchase, many are howling for more oversight from the US Government.
This leads to a risky proposition of Government oversight…
How much do we really want our Govt looking in to the finances and spending practices of those who receive bailout funds? After all, there are many past, present, and future bailouts in the works, and just as we are calling on oversight for the businesses receiving funding, what if we make too much noise, and they also want to scrutinize how WE spend funds given to us!
- In February 2008, the Federal Economic Stimulus Act put approximately $152 Billion back into taxpayer pockets.
- President Obama is currently proposing another stimulus check for taxpayers.
This all leads to a question on whether or not we as citizens, are also willing to have our own finances scrutinized! Lets face it, the Government gave US money also… are we willing to let then into our homes, and look at every penny we spend?!
